Cawthorne provide biggest
shock of this year’s Sykes Cup
CAWTHORNE delivered the biggest shock for years when the Drakes
League newcomers dumped Premiership side Marsden out of the quarter-finals of
the Romida Sykes Cup. Marsden must have been jumping with delight when they
discovered they had drawn the former Central League side in the last eight of
this year’s premier knockout competition – which was undoubtedly the tie every
other team wanted. But that delight turned to disbelief as the top flight club
incredibly collapsed to just 70 all out against their enthusiastic hosts. The
opening attack of Jake Rodgers (three for 33) and Noel Bramall (two for 15)
reduced the visitors to 42-5 before skipper Chris Walmsley took three for six
from seven overs to ensure there would be no recovery, Gareth Kilburn picking up
the other two wickets for 12 runs. Batting first, Cawthorne had posted an
average score of 194-9, Ben Simpson’s 52 the pick of the home batsmen, backed up
by Arron Pratt (30) and Kilburn (24), while Danny Clee took four for 41 – but
there was no indication of what was to come as the men from Dark Lane set up a
semi-final appearance in their first year in the League. Yes, they had only
beaten former Central League colleagues Cumberworth and Almondbury Wesleyans in
the first two rounds, and this was their first real test – but Walmsley’s side
certainly passed it with flying colours.
